Pound to Dollar Price News, Forecast

The Pound-Dollar rate could remain supported if strong UK inflation keeps BoE hike expectations elevated, although weaker UK activity may cap Sterling’s gains.

The Pound US Dollar (GBP/USD) exchange rate edged higher on Wednesday as the UK’s latest consumer price index reported a sharper-than-forecast acceleration in inflation.

At the time of writing, GBP/USD was trading at around $1.3394. A modest rise from Wednesday’s opening levels.

DAILY RECAP:

The Pound (GBP) trended broadly higher on Wednesday as the UK’s latest CPI figures outpaced forecasts.

Official figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed annual consumer price growth jumped from 3.1% to 3.5% in September, overshooting market expectations inflation would only accelerate to 3.4% and touching its highest level in nearly a year.

While escalating energy tariffs served as the primary catalyst for the headline surge, an accompanying pickup in core inflation indicates that second-round pricing pressures are starting to be felt across the economy.

The rise in inflation further cements expectations the Bank of England (BoE) will hike interest rates at its next meeting, and bolsters expectations for additional tightening in the months that follow.

However, Sterling’s gains were kept in check by the accompanying release of the UK’s latest public borrowing figures as a wider-than-expected fiscal deficit in September places more pressure on Chancellor John Healey ahead of next week’s Autumn Budget.

The US Dollar (USD) continued to soften on Wednesday amid an ongoing sell-off of AI stocks and dovish repricing of Federal Reserve’s interest rate expectations.

USD investors have grown increasingly concerned over the past week about vulnerabilities in the technology sector and the potential implications for the wider US economy.

This has severely undermined hawkish Fed convictions, with the US central bank now widely expected to leave interest rates on hold following the conclusion of its latest policy meeting next week.

Near-Term GBP/USD Forecast: Slowing Consumer Spending to Sap Sterling?

The recent deluge of UK economic data continues into the second half of the week and is likely to remain a key catalyst of movement for the Pound to US Dollar (GBP/USD) exchange rate.

However, rather than reinforcing Sterling’s recent gains, the data may act as a headwind, with the UK’s latest retail sales and services PMI releases expected to point to a weakening of consumer activity through September and October.

In the meantime, an expected rise in US initial jobless claims last week could apply some modest pressure to the US Dollar on Thursday.
