Marc Cucurella lived to regret his Euro 2024 jibe at Erling Haaland early into Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat against Manchester City.
It took last season’s Premier League top goalscorer just 18 minutes to open his account and get on the score sheet against the Blues at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
But fans’ minds immediately jumped to Cucurella as Haaland he put the reigning Premier League champions 1-0 up.
Rewind to Spain’s 2-1 win over England in the Euro 2024 final, Cucurella had a cheeky jibe at the Man City striker.
“Haaland you’d better tremble, Cucurella is coming,” the Spaniard sang into a mic on stage at La Roja’s celebrations.
Unfortunately for Cucurella, it was him who Haaland shook off with ease in Chelsea‘s box to fire City in front.
Speaking after the match, Haaland commented on the defender’s chant, where he aimed a thinly-veiled swipe at the former Brighton man.
He said: “Well, Cucurella is a funny man. Last season he asked for my shirt.
“And this summer he sings a song about me.”
While City eased to victory in west London, football fans loved seeing Haaland dominate Cucurella for his first of the campaign.
“Cucurella gets bullied and can’t deal with Haaland letting him score, who’s singing now! Some people write their own fate,” one wrote on X.
“Football script writers are so predictable cause Haaland scoring a goal with Cucurella defending on him was the most obvious thing ever,” a second joked.
A third said: “Turns out Haaland isn’t trembling, Cucurella…”
Cucurella returned to Stamford Bridge following an impressive Euro 2024 campaign.
The left-back was named in this summer’s Team of The Tournament, which also included England and Man City defender Kyle Walker.
Cucurella played six of Spain’s seven games, racking up the second-highest minutes of any of La Roja’s players (546), just behind goalkeeper Unai Simon (570).
He also set up the the winning goal for Mikel Oyarzabal in the final.
Meanwhile, Haaland has now been directly involved in 106 goals in 100 appearances for Man City.
His opener was his 91st goal for the club to go with his 15 assists.
Ex-Chelsea star Mateo Kovacic rubbed further salt in the wounds by doubling City’s advantage in the closing stages to seal a 2-0 win.
