European Club Results (Men)

LEN Champions League, Group Stage (Day 1)

Sabadell (ESP) 12, Savona (ITA) 10

Sabadell jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but Savona came back quickly and leveled at 5-5 by halftime. Alex Bowen recorded a hat trick for the Spanish side in the first half with three of the five Sabadell goals coming from the American attacker.

The Italians took the lead for the first time early in the third period on a man-up advantage. They had another man-up opportunity to go ahead by two but missed it, and at the other end, Sabadell put away three 6-on-5 tries in the next three minutes. Savona got one back before the last break but Sabadell fired one in from the perimeter for 9-7 and the Italians wasted another man-up in the last minute.

The home side were still in the game thanks to an action goal, and with 1:54 to go, Savona cut the deficit to a single goal once again at 10-11. Sabadell responded by forcing a man-up and converted it after a timeout to secure the road win.



 

LEN Euro Cup, Group Stage (Day 1)

Group A

Brescia (ITA) 11, Team Strasbourg (FRA) 9

Brescia and Max Irving were forced to dig deep and come from behind to secure a narrow victory against Strasbourg. Strasbourg was surprisingly ahead at halftime and they even made it 5-7 early in the third quarter. At that point, the Italian squad knew they were in danger of an upset and quickly leveled the score at 7-7. Strasbourg nudged back in front at the end of the third, but then Brescia produced a three-goal run to make it 10-8 with 3:32 remaining. The home team escaped victorious with an 11-9 final.


Group B

Ortigia (ITA) 16, Vouliagmeni (GRE) 15

Ortigia survived a late comeback to win an entertaining contest with Vouliagmeni. The first quarter produced 10 goals, including one from Dylan Woodhead to put Vouliagmeni up 4-2, before the Italians edged in front in the second quarter (8-7). Ortigia extended its advantage to three by the final break (13-10). In the fourth, Ortigia scored again to increase the gap to four, but that strike sparked a huge Vouliagmeni response. The Greeks leveled the score at 14-14 and set up an exhilarating finish. Tied at 15-15 with the game drifting towards penalties, Ortigia’s Lorenzo Giribaldi scored the game-winner on a man advantage with 23 seconds left to play.


Group C

Recco Waterpolo (ITA) 19, ASC Duisburg (GER) 8

The Italian giants stormed out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter, but the Germans were able to stem the tide a little in the second. Recco led 8-3 at halftime and put their foot back on the gas in the third and fourth quarters, with Ben Hallock scoring four times in the big win.


 

Serie A1 (Day 1)

Recco Waterpolo 14, Bologna De Akker 5

Hallock scored twice for the Italian champions in a 14-5 win over Tyler Abramson and Bologna De Akker.

Brescia 13, Genova Quinto 4

Irving registered a hat trick for Brescia and was named MVP of the game during an easy 13-4 win over Genova Quinto.


TeliMar 14, Nuoto Roma 11

Goalkeeper Drew Holland and TeliMar began play in Serie A1 with a 14-11 victory over Nuoto Roma.


Savona 17, Olympic Roma 6

Savona cruised past Olympic Roma 17-6 on Day 1 while they await Marko Vavic’s return to Italy.

Roma Vis Nova 11, Ortigia 7

Roma Vis Nova defeated Ortigia 11-7 in a league opening win as Quinn Woodhead prepares for his transfer within Italy.
