Fracture “right mandibular branch, fracture left mandibular body, multiple bilateral rib fractures” therefore, “serious injuries caused before the death event” and certainly not caused by the fire. In short, Georgica Burdusel, a 56-year-old Romanian citizen, would not have died only because of the fire in the house where he lived in via Appia Nuova at number 767/C in Rome, but also because of the beatings he had received before. This is what can be read in the order for the application of the precautionary measure in prison carried out this morning by the agents of the Rome police who arrested Coastal Mihaila, 55 years old, also Romanian and resident in the same house that was set on fire on the evening of 2 July 2023.
That evening the flames engulfed the house and the first to intervene was an off-duty carabiniere. Then the firefighters and police arrived. Two other Romanian housemates survived the blaze, one of whom was the suspect who was arrested. Burdusel’s body was found partially charred, having been killed first by carbon dioxide. However, the forensic medical examination confirmed that shortly before dying the man had suffered a real beating which probably prevented him from escaping and saving himself as his two compatriots and housemates had done. According to the third co-owner, the victim and the suspect had argued over the alleged murderer’s delay in paying his share of the rent. From other people questioned, investigators learned that the debt amounted to about a thousand euros.
Further elements that would link the murder to the 55-year-old would have been provided by the forensic police investigation that found on the suspect’s hands and clothes, biological traces, including blood stains, attributable to the victim. From the outcome of the investigations there can be no doubt about the fact that “the suspect – writes the investigating judge – was aware that Burdusel, who died of intoxication some time later, when he was set on fire, was still alive, although wounded in several parts of the body”. No doubt on the part of the investigating judge about the fact that “Mihaila, by setting fire to the room where the victim, wounded as mentioned, was lying, wanted to cause his death”.
