Tottenham have confirmed that former player Tony Galvin is recovering after suffering a stroke, with the 69-year-old a key part of the club’s success in the early 1980s
Tottenham have issued an update after club legend and former Republic of Ireland international Tony Galvin, 69, suffered a stroke.
Spurs confirmed the FA Cup and UEFA Cup winner had been taken ill in a statement on social media on Sunday. The club statement read: “Everyone at the club would like to extend their thoughts and best wishes to Tony Galvin, our 1984 UEFA Cup and 1981 and 82 FA Cup winner, who is now recovering following a stroke. We’re all behind you, Tony.”
The English born winger made 29 caps for Ireland, including three at Euro 88 in Jack Charlton’s groundbreaking team. His brother Chris Galvin was also a professional footballer.
Messages of support have poured in for the former hero on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Thoughts with Tony Galvin (on the wing, on the wing) part of the early 80s team I fell in love with and one of the good guys.
“We had so many stars in that era but Tony Galvin was always my favourite,” a second posted, reports the Daily Star.
“He didn’t get so many accolades but he was pivotal and brilliant – and utterly reliable, bombing down the wing. And he famously had a degree in Russian before joining Spurs.
“Such sad news. I loved watching him as a kid. Best wishes Tony,” a third shared. A fourth replied: “One of my favourite ever players, wishing him well on his recovery.”
Another added: “Best wishes to Tony, Tony Galvin, Tony Galvin on the wing. Hopefully he can make a full recovery. Best of luck Tony, a great man and a great Spur.”
Galvin signed for Spurs in 1978, making the switch from non-league Goole Town under then manager Keith Burkinshaw.
He played a crucial role in the successful squad during the early 1980s that secured consecutive FA Cups in 1981 and 1982. He was also part of the team that triumphed over Anderlecht 4-3 on penalties in the UEFA Cup final in 1984.
Galvin clocked up over 200 appearances for the Lilywhites before transferring to Sheffield Wednesday, Swindon Town and finally retiring at Gateshead.
Although born in Yorkshire and representing England schools, he made 29 appearances for the Republic of Ireland on the international stage.
